Meet Your Neighbors
We Might Be Biased
While we at Currahee are 100% sincere when we talk about the beauty of our mountain setting, the convenience of our lakefront location, the enjoyment of our amenities, the craftsmanship of our builders and the friendliness of our staff and our entire Toccoa community, we understand how you might think that our passion for Currahee Club might cloud our view. That’s why we’re taking a back seat, and letting our homeowners and members do the talking for us.
These couples and families searched high and low for the ideal community in which to own real estate. Searches that eventually led them all to Currahee. These Ambassadors are excited about sharing their Currahee story with you. They each offer a way for you to contact them to ask specific questions, to dig deeper, to get the full story. We’re confident that when you do, your search will lead you to Currahee as well.
“Currahee Club is an extended family. There are great people who live here. A house, community or golf course without good neighbors is nothing desirable. However, the people in and around Currahee make every effort to be inclusive, making it a great place to live and play.”

Meet the Pennebakers
Vachel and Shirley Pennebaker have made Currahee home since 2007. They were both previously active within the community of Chicago, where they retired in 2000. Vachel is a private pilot with an instrument and complex aircraft rating. He also holds SCCA and IMSA Competitive driver’s licenses used while racing automobiles. Together they have two children and five grandchildren. One summer Vachel played golf at Currahee, and the beauty of the course, paired with the developer’s vision, made him realize that Currahee would be ideal summer living for their family.
While Vachel’s favorite amenity is the golf course, Shirley notes other favorites, such as swimming at the pool, working out in the fitness center, and boating on the lake. They all enjoy coming together for the community events, such as the Farmers Market, The Toccoa Symphony Orchestra, and Low Country Boil hosted throughout the year at Currahee.
With all there is to love about this community, both Vachel and Shirley believe the biggest draw is the people. The Pennebakers now live full-time at Currahee.
“We felt that it was a great opportunity to be a part of something that would be such an asset to Toccoa. And Cynthia always dreamed of building a house. She loves anything to do with planning and designing.”

Meet the Sanders
Janney and Cynthia Sanders have been longtime residents of Toccoa and have had a connection with Currahee from the very beginning. Janney has been a practicing attorney in Toccoa since 1978. He is currently a partner with the law firm Sanders, Ranck & Skilling. His law firm began representing the original Currahee developers with the purchase of the property, and he and Cynthia, a retired school teacher, decided early on to purchase a lot and join the club. They began building their home in 2008 and moved into the house in 2009.
Cynthia can tell you all about Toccoa, and especially where to shop. She shops at stores downtown and on Big A Road, but truly loves to shop at CK Morgan & Company, which is a local monogram and gift shop.
Cynthia believes that those who have yet to visit would be surprised by Currahee and that the beauty and lifestyle can only be experienced by being here. She recommends a fall visit, and believes “there’s nothing better than sitting on your back screened-in porch in the mornings or evenings, sipping on coffee and listening to the leaves fall and the animals scurrying. You are simply enjoying God’s beauty and blessings.”
“Locally, there are quaint shops, restaurants, fitness gyms, grocery stores, and franchises to meet most any need. You feel as if you are on vacation every time you visit Currahee Club.”

Meet the Tabors
Wondering what life is like in Toccoa? You couldn’t find two better people to discuss that with than Don and Connie Tabor. Don is an attorney with a private law practice in town, as well as a Chief Magistrate Judge. And Connie has been employed by the City of Toccoa for 27 years, currently serving as the Community Development Director, managing special events, downtown development, the Ritz Theatre, and historic preservation.
Not surprisingly, Connie is a fan of Toccoa and is happy to share its appeal. “There are quaint shops, restaurants, fitness gyms, grocery stores, and franchise businesses to meet most any need,” she says. “There are also many cultural opportunities, civic organizations, churches, and outdoor activities available as well.”
The Tabors were drawn to Currahee because of the lovely surroundings, the social interaction, meeting new people and the wonderful amenities. Like most members, they’ve experienced the hike up Currahee Mountain. Judge Don says it’s grueling, but rewarding: like reliving a small part of “Band of Brothers.” Given the option, however, he prefers the courts… tennis courts, that is. “I really enjoy playing tennis year round with my member pals on the floodlit tennis courts.”
“The first time we drove into Currahee, we noticed how beautifully maintained the entire facility is. And every person we met along the purchasing process gave us the feeling that they honestly wanted us here.”

Meet the VanDykes
Don and Barb Van Dyke are empty nesters from Rabun County, Georgia, who were looking for something different. Someplace where they could go walking every morning and every evening without clogged up streets. A place that was beautifully maintained and staffed with friendly people. That search led them to Currahee.
Don is a pilot with Delta Air Lines and Barb manages the household affairs. They appreciate that Toccoa has everything they need for day-to-day living, including “a wonderful airport ten minutes from our home, where we hangar our personal aircraft.” Barb also notes that Toccoa is close to everything, and a thirty to a (maximum of) sixty-minute drive is all one needs for anything. “On a nice day, we like to take a short drive through the mountains or go to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino.”
“The members here are the kindest and friendliest bunch of folks we have ever encountered. You will make great friends immediately!”

Meet the Winns
Sterling and Cindy Winn are the owners and operators of the Widener Insurance Agency in Johnson City, Tennessee. The search that led them to Currahee began with the desire for a weekend getaway that could someday evolve into a retirement location. Their requirements included an excellent golf course, stunning mountain views, easy lake access, the opportunity to socialize with like-minded neighbors, and no more than 200 miles from home. Currahee fit the bill on all counts.
Sterling and Cindy fell in love with Currahee immediately, as did their 14-year-old son! “We love the friendly members and staff and – of course – the golf course,” says Cindy. “I really enjoy spending time on the walking trails, and even relaxing while enjoying the scenery from our deck.”
The Winns love the surrounding area as well. Whether it’s shopping at All Things Currahee in Toccoa, dining in Highlands, North Carolina, or taking in a Broadway show at the Peace Center in Greenville, South Carolina, adventure is never too far away. Cindy recalls, “We took a hike up Currahee Mountain and saw the hawks flying below us.”
